Modern Mystery Revealed

I am posting my pictures almost a month later than the my modern mini mystery round robin quilt reveal Linky mainly because my quilt was one of the stragglers that didn't make it back home until well after the deadline. I received this block in the mail last week.

I liked it, but didn't know what to do with it. Some of the quilters spent a lot of time carefully piecing their borders to my quilt and I wanted to honor that. Some of the other borders needed to be resewn to the quilt top with proper 1/4" seams since the fabric was already beginning to fray. So I started first by deconstructing it. And as I did, I wondered how I could use it. I'm one of those people who likes my art to be functional.

Then suddenly yesterday morning, I remembered my torn up plastic Ziploc bag in my purse used to carry my hand applique, scissors, thread and needles to get some handwork done on the train to work in the mornings.  I decided to make myself a proper pouch to carry those supplies.

Here is the front of the pouch. Now the colors are popping! The ultra linear design is gone and the eye travels all over the place.

Here is the back. The front colors blend very well with some leftover Matisse's women fabric I had.

I added some pouches to hold the needles and scissors.

My hand applique border project fits neatly in the pouch.

All folded up, it fits perfectly in my purse, with the dimensions at 14"L x 8"H x 1"D

I am very, very happy with my new bag and look forward a little bit more to my morning commute come Monday.

Modern Mini Mystery Round Robin Quilt

A few months ago, when I entered the quilt world online, I came across Michele Kuhn's blog, Quilts From My Crayon Box, when she was looking for participants in her Modern Mini Mystery Round Robin. I didn't know much about modern, but I do love a good mystery, so I decided to join in.

Now, 6 months later, we have all finished the monthly send around and most of us have received our quilt tops or will soon receive them.  I'm still not sure what was so modern about it, but it was pretty interesting.

I started my modern mini mystery journey with this as my center block.

For the first month of my add on, I added a pieced border to this block.
Next came this bright, breezy block.
I did others, but I guess I forgot to take their pictures. But here is another one, where I tried to bring the center colors back into the border.
Then the last one I had to work on was this.
And last, here is a photo of my quilt top which is on its way to me.
I'm looking forward to seeing it first hand.
If you want a great sightseeing tour, take a trip to the following pages and look at all the other quilt tops that transpired over the summer. And thanks Michele, this was fun!

And the Mystery Continues

So I toiled and struggled to sew this octagon in such a way that the center will lie perfectly flat.  It didn't.  I plan to take a class soon to learn how to do this.  Meanwhile, I resorted to my usual coverup, an appliqued circle.  I then cut the center out of the octagon, framed it in a yellow, which in retrospect should have been a bias cut, then appliqued it again to a roller coaster motif.

I took risks with the fabric choices and I'm not quite sure if I like it yet.  I like the composition, but the colors, well . . . we'll just see what happens. It's only 6 1/2" inches, and others will be adding to it. I'll find out in December when I receive the final product with everyone's contributions sewn on.  I like that.

It's a Mystery to Me

Last week, I entered a Modern Mini Mystery Quilt Round Robin.  I'm not supposed to blog about the work I add onto others' quilts, because the end result is supposed to be a surprise. But I can blog about my starter block!  As soon as I finish this 6 1/2" square, I will send it off to another quilter who will add onto to a little something and so forth. Meanwhile, each month I receive someone else's work and will add onto it a 1 to 2 inch border of my choice. We all should be getting our finished quilts back in December, with our square in the middle, or someplace else on the top.

I never tried the Stack and Whack method before, so I bought Bethany Reynolds book, "Stack-n-Whackipedia" when Borders went out of business. This week, I tried my first block.

Step 1, I cut the fabric into a 21" strip and then sliced off a little of the end to use as my guide.
Step 2, I used the guide to find where the pattern repeat begins again, and cut there, and continued until I ran out of fabric.
Step 3, I spent a really long time pinning the layers of fabric in the exact same spot. This is the slow going part, since my vision isn't what it used to be. And it never was that great to begin with.
Step 4. So now I have a carefully pinned pile of 8 layers of fabric.
Step 5. Next, I first cut the fabric into a 2 parallelograms, then into 45 degree triangles. Thank you, oh high school football coach/geometry teacher somewhere in Ohio! 35 years later, and I still remember that stuff! For some reason, Aerosmith plays in my head when I calculate angles. Why is that?
Now, the mystery reveals itself. I formed the triangles together to see what patterns emerge. This 1/2 yard of fabric yielded 4 octagons.

Next time I blog about this, I will be showing you the final block.
